i'm trying to set up quake for the first time.
i'm using the x11 binary and the shareware download.

i've followed the instruction but it crashes with:

./quake.x11
Added packfile ./id1/pak0.pak (339 files)
FindFile: can't find gfx/pop.lmp
Playing shareware version.
PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx.wad
Console initialized.
UDP Initialized
Exe: 00:36:23 Oct 14 1997
 8.0 megabyte heap
PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/palette.lmp
PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/colormap.lmp
600k surface cache
VID: shared memory id=48768, addr=0x2b429000
VID: shared memory id=48769, addr=0x2b449000

Sound Initialization
PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/conback.lmp
/dev/dsp: No such device
Could not open /dev/dsp
S_Startup: SNDDMA_Init failed.
Segmentation fault

is there a way to run it with no sound support?
i don't own a sound card, don't really want one.
am i S.O.L.?
