i have the same problem w/ my 24x CDROM... it's annoying, because
during games like Grim Fandango or play mp3z quietly (like Sarah
Mclachlan), i get pauses in my game, because the cdrom has to spin up,
then it spins down, and i hear the cdrom OVER the mp3z spinning up and
down during the mp3z... (VERY annoying, especially at nite)...
HOWEVER, my new 4x12 Teac CDR doesn't do this at all (or when it does,
it is barely perceptable)... haven't been able to burn one freaking cd
('cause i don't have any blank cd's), but i still love it! :^)

jesse

p.s. where is a good place to get "cheap" blank cd's that are of decent
quality? preferably offline (like in the Wichita / Newton area, or
anywhere closer to Marion!:^)
