I've been using the HP 2100M Laser printer ($7-800) for several months and it
works great with Linux. The "M" model has HP postscript emulation.
I've noticed the price of the HP 2100TN has come down to $999.
The HP 2100SE is without postscript ($6-700). The difference is HP emulation
is better at grey scale than ghostscript (by a small margin).

Go to this web page for Linux/Unix printer compatibility list.
