It depends on whether your system creates several VCs on startup or is
xdm only I presume.  Try Ctrl-Alt-F2 to F4 and see if that jumps you to
a VC with a login prompts.  Alt-F7 may jump you back into X.  Not all
systems initialize like this (as my Slacware based system does) so you
may have to dig a little and learn how to init a getty on VC 2 while
still having xdm on VC 1, or whatever VC it is on.  X generally uses VC
7 and up.  I haven't mucked around with this as my system was originally
configured to init VCs 1 to 6 and X uses 7 for its display.  I start X
manually each time and don't use xdm (or its variants).
