not to worry, you'll survive the day.
first thing is to create a linux partition
you'll need  to either partition your disk(if you wish to keep nt) .
with nt you'll probably need some commercial software like partition majac.
reformat the entire drive(if you don't).
get an additional drive if you don't like either of the other options.

after rereading your post i have a question.
please don't be offended.
did you just get the kernal or do you have an entire distribution(slack, redhat, pht, debian.......)?
having just the linux kernal is like only having comand.com and calling it windows 95(i'll get flamed for that).
you'll need to either get all of the different system files and utils downloaded
or get a distribution.    i recommend the latter.

i have had good luck with PHT and redhat.  there are people on this list that can help with any of the others.
my cd's are currently on loan.  but you should be able to find someone with a set.

dual booting both nt and linux is more complicated than 95/98 and linux.
be prepaired to do a little more background.
linux gazette had a few tutorials on it.  start there.
the easy out is a boot floppy but these wear out.

anyway we need some more information about what you have
and what you want to do.

let us know?

Ok, at the risk of having my inbox flooded with various
types of spam in punishment for
being a newbie, I submit this question.

I DL'd the latest kernel, 2.2.7.   Onto a 133mhz box with a
fresh install of nt. I unzipped it
and it showed up as one of those stupid generic "windows"
file types.  How do I install it as
an OS?  Mock me, cast aspersions in my direction but please
tell me how to get
Linux running on a box.... Thanks for your time .... Darrell

Oh I've slipped the surly bonds of dos
and danced the skies on LINUX silvered wings.
