It sounds to me like there is a problem with the upgrades themselves.
Were they "official" RedHat upgrades, or were they third-party
or experimental ones? You may want to just upgrade the kernel
and see if it works. Chances are that it will. You *may* need
to upgrade pppd, and perhaps ipchains if you do routing, but
other than that, you should be set.
