[aclug-L] C Library...

sorry about the newbie question, but what exactly is gcc?  is it just
the c compiler?  most of the stuff on my box is a very recent version,
except for gcc... it is the version off of the redhat 5.2 distro
(2.7.2.3)...  but i have also seen gcc-2.8.x...  what is the difference,
and why does redhat 5.2 use the 2.7.x version if gcc-2.8.x was out
before redhat 5.2 was released?
