It's probably not worth it.  2.8 is not in wide use because of the 2.0 
kernel compile problem.  egcs is the current/future of gcc, and you'll 
see it becoming phased in, I believe.  I already use egcs exclusively
on Alpha.

gcc 2.8 has a few updates for C++ and the like, but egcs has far more, 
so upgrading to 2.8 is not really worth it unless you have a
specific need not being filled by 2.7.x.
