They were made by different groups.

There is a status of the x86 one on www.blackdown.org.  Apparently,
it's finished but doesn't yet completely pass JCK, and the contract
with Sun says that it must before it is released.

Indeed!  This follows only a few days on the heels of the similar Java
announcement, I believe.  I think that Solaris is a bigger step for
Sun, though.  I will really like it when Solaris becomes GPL'd.  It
does not currently qualify as Open Source, unfortunately.
