There are several programs to do this:

 * slrn, a text-based program, is pretty nice.  If you've got a modem
   connection, it will be the fastest option available due to its
   aggressive caching.

 * If you have Netscape Communicator 4.0 or higher, you can
   get to newsgroups by using Communicator -> Collabra Discussions

 * knews is an X-based no-frills newsreader.

 * If you are an Emacs/Xemacs fan like me, use GNUS (M-x gnus).  It
   is probably the most powerful news client I've ever seen.
