Hi Wesley.

I'm not really familiar with Debian as I've used Slackware, but I'm
wondering if lpd is being started.  Since you can cat a file to
/dev/lp1, I think your permissions on that device are just fine.  I
installed magicfilter here with no problems.

You might also check /etc/hosts.lpd (that's where it is in Slackware, at
least) and be sure there aren't a bunch of weird entries in there.  In
fact, my /etc/hosts.lpd has no entries and is a blank file.

Lastly, ensure there is a spool directory for the printer you specify in
/etc/printcap with a line similar to:

        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp1: \

This sets up the spool directory for that particular printer entry and
if it doesn't exist, lpd may be looking elsewhere to try to spool your
print job.
