FWIW, and for the benefit of the archives, I have got things working 
after a fashion.

First I did the name translation to stop everything being under INBOX. 
This solved the first problem that I was having. It still crashed 
frequently though.

I then made sure the local IMAP server was set to maxconnections = 1, 
keepconnectionopen = no.

This got it working, after a fashion.

It is, however, still very unstable. If I do something as audacious as 
moving a message onto the local server from elsewhere, without it having 
come via the remote system, offlineimap tends to crash on the next sync. 
This is often a UID problem. It may always be a UID problem for all I 
know, but it's not always obvious. Anyway, it seems quite plausible that 
this is simply because the local IMAP server is broken.

When I get some time, I'll try installing Courier and see if that's better.
