S3 is a manufacturer. You can't clone that. You can buy chips from the
manufacturer, then put them on your "generic" board. Savage 4 is a specific
chipset manufactured by S3. That would be an example of a chipset sold to
other manufacturers (and possibly relabled with other brand names). Voodoo
is a family of chipsets. Prior to Voodoo 3, they were often sold by 3dfx
and resold under different names (Creative Labs for instance sold cards with
the Voodoo 2 chipset called a VideoBlaster something-or-other (they have a
lot of "VideoBlaster" products, including webcams, video cards, and probably
other things).
So still I submit that it's not an S3 or Voodoo clone, because I believe
that is a nonsensical term, just as "a Toyota clone" is nonsensical. It's
either a Toyota, or it's not. If it uses parts manufactured by Toyota
(which is common), but is sold under another name, then it uses Toyota parts
and is sold under a different name, but is not a clone.
I've heard a similar misunderstanding when people have talked about
"USRobotics clones" when refering to modems with a TI chipset (which
many/most/all USR modems use). Just because they both get their chipsets
from the same source doesn't mean they're clones of each other, though.
If Chevy buys a body from Toyota, and puts their engine and transmission in
it and sells it as a Nova (which they did), then it's not a Toyta clone...
it's a Chevy built with some Toyota parts.
