Slackware? Oh, trust me, they've come looong way in past six years. I
tried Slack 6.x couple years back, and it's whole lot different than some
earlier slack... (of course, it also may be due to my better understanding
of Linux in general too...)

If you try Debian, you'll probably find the learning curve steeper than
with Red Hat and especially Mandrake. On the other hand it's not as
steep as Slackware (unless Slack has changed markedly in the past six
years ;-)
