Not a stupid question, but I have a stupid answer.  I forgot to recompile
the kernel.  I looked at .config (just now) and sound_sb and awe_synth are
set to module, so I'm the goat.

And you have been a lot of help - I'm just way in over my head.  So many
questions in the kernel compile don't mean anything to me.
