Look at lftp and ncftp.  lftp has a very bash-like command line interface 
which allows ftp jobs to be backgrounded, suspended, etc.

Search for these apps on www.freshmeat.net, or www.rpmfinder.net.   Let me 
know if you need additional help beyond that.  I've done quite a bit of work 
automating ftp transfers at a previous employer, so I've got a pretty good 
idea what you would need.
