I am not sure if it is the same problem you are having, but I have seen
something simmilar.  I did an install on a 300mhz desktop unit and the
screen did the same thing.  It drove me nuts until I took the S3 virge
dx video card out and put in an older one of the same model that I KNEW
worked with RH6.1.  After that the install and thw machine ran great! 
It seemed to me that it would trip the power save feature every time
that the Xwindows server would start. I have subsequently tried that
card in a machine that was already loaded with 6.1 and as soon as I
stated X... Blamo!  it was just that card I guess.  It is a good thing
people out the run windows... other wise some of this junk I have had
wouldn't even run half the time.
