You might try not using SYSLINUX, which is what most (all?) popular Linux
distro boot disks use.  If you can copy the needed files (Linux kernel, root
disk image, etc) to the hard drive, then use loadlin to boot, that might get
around the problem.

I've never heard of the system _locking_, but I have had problems installing
Linux (the system would just freeze) using some older Phoenix BIOS
systems... the above mentioned method fixed it.  Maybe it will for you, too?
