After I replied (incorrectly) to the original post,
someone 
else said you can do it (trans. bkgd.) with alpha
channels.
When I went to check it out, the "tips" startup
dialog opened
with, guess what, how to make the bottom
("background") layer
transparent using alpha channels. Just surf through
the tips 
till you find it...
