Hi Richard!

I suggest u should try iuz's war client (maybe soon merged to the main
source). W/ that default production in a new city is settler (which is
the best for a long time :).

Before I get contact with any other civilization, I usually always build
settlers first, and the first combat unit is an annoyance, but once
I
border a hostile civ, building a defensive unit is first on the list
of
    priorities.

Except early in the game, I usually send a defensive unit (built in a
city with a barracks) along with the settlers. It is safer, and seems
more efficient, so that the new city can use its limited production to
start building the improvements it needs to have. Is that not the
best strategy?

Hm i almost never send defensive units w/ settlers, only if i'm
absolutelly sure there's an enemy there, and wanna build a city right
next to him. Eg settle an iron of him :)

Usually i send out first only an explorer in trireme, maybe an
explorer+settler, or horse+settler.

If u exlore unknown islands, and if u meet enemy there, horsemen is much
better than the defensive units imho. If it's a first contatc, there's a
good chance u find an empty city. If u land a phlanx next to it, he'll
know u wanna attack and will buy unit there. W/ a horsemen u can take
over 1-2 empty citty fast. U can use the hotsemen to defend too if u
wanna (sentry+attack).

In a general smallpox game, u don't need improvements anyway. I usually
build these:

- before contact: only settlers
- after mapmaking: 1-2 triremes to explore, and still settlers
- in 'run for magellans/jsb/michelangelos/suntzu': caravans
- in general invasion stage: coastal cities teh best available ships,
inner cities diplo, horsemen, maybe caravan.

Only city improvement i rarely use is coastal defense, in some cases in
the strategic cities that could be important.

bye, hirisov
