That, I can explain.

NumLock sends a special signal to the window manager -- basically, it says
"frag off". Most window managers will -not- intercept keystrokes [and mouse
clicks?] while NumLock is on.

You need it for when your window manager wants a keystroke that the
application wants, too -- the manager traps it without NumLock, but with it,
it passes through to the app. Netscape's "Back" [Alt-Left arrow] is one
example of this -- fvwm2 eats it.
