Well, I thought the simplest way to give players separate tech trees
without much support from freeciv would be to provide them with an
extra inital tech, which would be a requirement for all other special
techs in the tree.

I guess this idea only works if you can mark a tech as untransferable,
and if techs can have more than two requirements.

Now I don't see a lot of use for this idea as long as freeciv is about
human civilization, but it would give you a lot of choice if you had
to design alien nations, you could have tech trees for say stealth,
bionic tech, engineering and economy, and then you give 2 each of 4 of
these inital techs to each nation, which would give you a combination
of 6 different but overlapping tech trees, and even more combinations
for any other tech tree you added.

I guess this idea isn't much help when you are thinking about
designing research for preset teams, but such a situation would occur
if players allied in-game and could forge a treaty for automatic tech
exchange.
