Update:

I noticed that these same help-texts are now missing in all freeciv-versions 
which I have installed (2.0.0-beta2, 2.0.0-beta3 and cvs-Nov-06)

Each of these is installed in it's own directory (/usr/local/freeciv*) with own 
start-up script, so I don't understand how these could affect each other.

Also freeciv-1.14.1 is installed on $PATH, and doesn't show help-texts either. 
Has there been some change in beta-3 so that this might be a problem?

Before I installed 2.0.0-beta3, I had never seen this problem, but now I can't 
see those help-texts in any freeciv-version.
