You do not understand. pkg-config takes care of the library path and
link compiler options. The client doesn't check for FT like it doesn't
check for X11R6. It is not supposed to. That is platform specific and
part of the GTK+ 2.0 implementation.

I assume this user either didn't install the proper development packages,
or changed FreeType or XFree86 (I think XFree86 now comes with FreeType)
and his installation got botched up somehow.
