RedHat 8.0 ships 1.13.0. So you are using the rpms from
ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/packages/linux/redhat/?!

Both server and client have the same version?

If it crashes hard with a core dump can you mail me a stack trace?

When do you get the "invalid city coords" messages?

Are there any messages before the "Lost connection" message?
