I would really like to see ping time next to each player in the player
dialog. That would really help in spotting problems, and there are often
connection problems.
Conversely, in the connect dialog I would like to get a ping time
for each server before deciding which one I want to connect to.
But in that case, a Freeciv ping is too expensive, because it means
you already have to set up the whole Freeciv connection to get it.
Just a check to see if anything is accepting connections on the advertised
port would be good enough. The same mechanism can be used by the
metaserver to see if its servers are still up. I don't know enough
about TCP/IP to write that quickly.
