dwp made quite some efforts to ensure that none of the GNU tools are required.
It used to compile with Solaris make and Solaris cc, and I think also
with FreeBSD make (FreeBSD has GNU cc).

I haven't been checking lately if this is still the case.
FreeBSD make fails on the default ./configure call.
