Do you know anything about the particulars of this bug?  I'd be very
grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Yes, but not with full functionality.  (No automatic charset
conversion etc. etc.)

I'm not sure what you're saying; did all the strings with 8-bit
characters disappear or what?
