As far as I can see all those workaround for vague X configurations really 
should be folded into a macro collection used by all the X using programs. It 
looks like a bunch of really basic problems! Also, then we wouldn't have to 
maintain it by ourselves :).
As I said I was somewhat surprised that I can't seem to find such a macro 
collection.
