Don't you feel there could be real walls in freeciv?
In real life the Chinese Great Wall or the Roman limes system
(think of Hadriane's wall in Britain) played an important role.
Not to mention the Berlin Wall.
(Or the Iron Curtain. An advanced version?)
It could be implemented like fortresses, built by settlers,
slowing the motion of units and maybe increasing defence
strength, just like the fortresses. Or it could just slow
(or stop?) units, and one could build some fortresses (also
standind for watchtowers) at every 4th-5th tile of the wall.
Of course only very powerful/productive countries could really
build such a thing. But history shows it's not impossible.
It could really change gaming style of course, at least for some games.
Obviously they'd become obsolete by modern units, just like city walls.

Btw, it's always been so ridiculous to have a Great Wall wonder
on a 3-tile island. But that's an other question.
