The reason why I don't normally use them?  The easiest trade routes to
create are into cities you can reach with sea transports.  But if you
can get a Caravan into the city, it's equally easy (actually easier!)
to get a Spy or a military unit into the city.

After a while, I learned that within a few turns of establishing a trade
route in an enemy city, I had conquered that city, greatly diminishing
the trade returns.

So I figured I'd just omit the Caravan step, and go straight for the
conquest.  Speeds the game up a bit that way. ;-)
