But they can't, at the corner of the cube, where there is a point
which only borders three grids, not four, making these 8 points
totally different from any other on the cube.

the 3D representation is not an exact, geometric cube. In fact, assembling
the projections in 3D space would yield an impossible object.
The six projections are just aligned in a cube shape. the "top" projection
"overhangs" (and thus overlaps) all "side" projections, so there are no
special tiles (cornerpoints) required. But on the 2D map, you don't notice
the impossibility of the object in 3D space. Even a 3D approximation of the
object, that might be supplied to the player for navigational purposes,
would not expose this trickery. It should be too small to expose the
(impossible) details.
