In the civs i know, the world is either a cilinder ("round") that
connects west and east, or a ring that also connects top and bottom of
the map. Both shapes do not correspond to our 3D world.
Wouldn't it add some nice flavour to the game, if the map-object would
construct a truly spherical world, that would be emulated for the
clients as being a flat map. I think (but am not sure) that as long as
the map-view of the player/client is not too big compared to the size of
the globe, it should be possible to emulate a flat map with square
tiles. As the nation discovers more of the world, (s)he might get
disoriented a bit. Until (s)he realises the world is not flat but round,
a real event in the game.
Implementation would remain mainly localised inside the map-object. I
did notice some other objects also carry out tasks that are in fact map
object tasks, but as long as the map emulates the sphere as if it were
flat and presents a local flat map to its clients, the map-tasks in
other objects should not suffer.
