About ferryboats:

Thue already has a ferryboat patch. It adds a F command that can be
issued on vessels to make them available for goto use. as Tobias
suggested. It is operational, but buggy; apply

  http://hjem.get2net.dk/thue_janus_kristensen/ferryboat2.diff

in order to try it out (it will probably work against 1.11.0).

Thue has added a 'manager' object to coordinate the use of the vessel
within the goto. This is very useful for it could be applied wider.

Instantly? That would be too much like airports, wouldn't it?
An alternative is to have a command that assigns boats to specific
ferry lines, so they would automatically move in between the two
ports, taking all sentried units across.
