Why not? You contradict yourself. Is there any reason why, for
example, the real-world Scottish can't be the first to Alpha
Centauri? (Or Mars, for that matter)

Keep in mind that, by that time, they will have ceased being
"barbarians" for centuries.

Also, most existing nations have evolved from "barbarians" in
one form or another, so the point is quite moot. Even getting
back to Freeciv, what are _you_ when the game starts? Some
settlers and some explorers, and sometimes some military?
Barbarians.

Not to forget that hitting huts and getting some military units
from them in the early stages is a known strategy. So most
players can be considered a "coalition of barbarians" in origin.

Of course I can (assuming they are still "Barbarians" by that
time). It would be more or less like on a Klingon ship.
