Well, most games i play end before 1000 AD only because one of opponents
give up or is too tired to play. I never saw a game in which ended
because all other players was wiped out. But i played few games with my
friends here; few of my games were finished by builidng spaceships. Few of
them were finished by nuclear wars. And yes, big cities gave you advantage
in games after 500-1000 AD. 

And, of course, games with using modern weapons are much more fun than gen
2 games with three kinds of units : ironclads, destroyers, cruisers.
