IIRC, the view of their spaceship was flashed up each time they added
to it, so you got to see their progress.  Of course Civ1 end-of-turn
is effectively interactive (flashing up city screens to changing
finished production etc), so it wasnt that bad.  Even exciting
sometimes for a close space-race situation.  Messages would just be
the less-intrusive freeciv equivalent.
