Well, it's possible.  You keep the logic of the map exactly as it is now
--- a cylinder you can't go off the top edge of. Then you map it
graphically onto most of a sphere, leaving the poles clear.

But you're right, to do  sphere all over, you need hexes or triangles I
think.
