Well, I already found one advantage of alternate tiles: it can be 
slightly easier to find land when exploring oceans.  In particular,
the tx.darkness tiles completely obscure tx.coast_cape for trident,
but not for engels (or dwp engels-based).  (For classic/brunus the
tx.coast_cape are pretty much invisible too.) 

Eg, with #=dark with ocean, -=known/visible ocean, +=dark with land

     +#

OTOH trident whales appear to beach themselves alot on classic/brunus/dwp
coastlines ;-)
