They are back!  While not in the latest stable release (1.9.0), those pesky
Barbarians have infiltrated the current development version (1.9.1-devel).

I find the Mini Map quite useful as a navigation tool -- having the whole
world at ones' fingertips.  But, you are correct that on larger worlds its
growth intrudes on the more useful Main Map.

Rather than a scrolling Mini Map, how about a factor-of-two zoom for larger
worlds?
