You seem to use a virtual screen that bigger than the screen.
Under Linux, using a windows manager which does not break up the screen in 4 
fixed windows and allows smooth scrolling helps a bit. Other than that, isn't 
the getting bigger thing really related more to how the
virtual screens are managed. ANd how big the fonts are and the tiles.

Hmm, I think I understood what you mean now. Better answer: maximizing the 
window will downsize it ;-)
