SPECIAL REPORT: CONSUMER ELECTRONICS GIANTS LAUNCH LINUX LEAGUE
The major manufacturers of consumer electronics equipment appear to
be adopting embedded Linux in a BIG way. In a historic
announcement earlier this week, eight consumer electronics (CE)
powerhouses -- including Matsushita, Sony, Hitachi, NEC, Royal
Philips Electronics, Samsung, Sharp, and Toshiba -- proclaimed the
establishment of the CE Linux Forum (CELF). The group issued a
statement outlining its initial mission, and posted membership
information on its website. Our exclusive "special report" brings
you all the details including perspectives from around the web.

MOTOROLA SOFTWARE UNIT AIMS LINUX AT MOBILE DEVICE MARKET
Motorola's Metrowerks software tools subsidiary threw its hat into
the smart handhelds OS ring, when it rolled out OpenPDA, a
"complete" software stack and associated tools for mobile devices
based on a combination of open source and proprietary software.
OpenPDA, which is already being used by Sharp in its latest Zaurus
PDAs, includes an embedded Linux OS, GUI framework, and Java
runtime environment, plus a full range of apps commonly found in
today's smart handheld devices. Metrowerks is positioning OpenPDA
as a competitor to Palm, Pocket PC, Windows CE, and VxWorks.

OSDL ADDS ANDREW MORTON, LINUX KERNEL MAINTAINER, TO ITS RESOURCES
The Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) announced that Linux kernel
maintainer Andrew Morton will work for the lab under an agreement
between Digeo Inc. (Morton's employer) and OSDL. Morton will be
focused exclusively on the 2.6 kernel during its maintenance cycle,
the Lab said. OSDL recently announced that Linus Torvalds, the
creator of Linux, has joined the lab as its first OSDL Fellow,
taking a leave from Transmeta Corporation, where he is currently
a Transmeta Fellow.

NEW SCRIPTING LANGUAGE FOR QT-BASED APPS
According to Trolltech, Qt Script for Applications (QSA) leverages
the powerful Qt API, taking static Qt/C++ applications and making
them dynamic. Trolltech said QSA can be used to prototype changes
in already-compiled applications, write test scripts, customize
applications to specific requirements, script-enable applications
to allow power-users to add sophisticated macros, and provide
script-based fixes for previously released applications.
