What we recommend (and what we do for our customers) if you are doing
dynamic ADSL is put the authentication in the CPE instead of on the
individual machine.  We use a rather full featured router for a DSL CPE.
It does PPPoA (PPP over ATM) right in the CPE so you aren't messing with
PPPoE on the workstation.  This box also does DCHP and/or NAT. Pretty cool
solution and it is actually less expensive than most of the dumb DSL
bridges out there.

There is really no excuse for that.  I would think that a pretty basic
requirement of a "good ISP" would be that your throughput would not vary
based on the time of day or number of other people using it.  The internet
has enough bottlenecks, your ISP should never be one of them.
