I have the book and I really like it, but then again I am a M$ refugee and
a Linux newbie. I don't like being paranoid but my linux box had been
hacked into while it was wide open to the internet on RR. It isn't RR's
fault or anyone elses fault. I just had a false sense of security and
thought that since I was running linux, that my computer would be safe
from hackers. My thinking was that I don't have anything valuable on my
hard drive, just a few celtic *.mp3 files and some nature *.jpg files. I
had had remote logons and my computer had been used as a jump for
spammers. Other things may have been going on that I am still not aware
of. With Jeff Vian's help I now have a secure linux firewall and I have 3
linux computers behind the firewall. I am a happy camper now and I am
really wanting to learn more about the security. I still don't understand
why anyone would want to hack into someone else's computer -- isn't it
like picking a lock and getting into someone's house?
I vote that it is a good book and well worth the money. Another good book
is Maximum Linux Security written by a former hacker. There is some
overlap of info but written from slightly different views. Jesse --
suggest that your wife give you the book as an early Christmas present and
she can get an early Christmas present also. Sound like a fair trade?
