KMail works well for me. Of course, I think Michael expressed a dislike for the "windows like" KDE. To me it is the very best of both worlds, a very powerful and useful unix operating system with the availability of the very best in unix gui as well.

I have NEVER been a fan of netscape mail.  It is broken, proprietary,
featureless, bloated, etc.  You may wish to investigate:

GUI-only clients:

balsa
exmh
xmh

GUI and character-mode client:
gnus (note: very powerful but is not very easy to learn.)

Character-mode only clients:
mutt
elm
mh (a bit on the wacky side, but hey.)
