But this only works on PPP and isn't particularly user friendly.  I'd much
prefer to use a monitor that can display the traffic - not just the number
of bytes but the throughput - in near real time.  pppstats looks to be 
designed mostly for figuring out what type of compression you are getting
on your ppp link.  If I just want raw numbers, I could poll ifconfig at
regular intervals and do the math.
