That worked. Thanks.
However, a couple more questions:
1) At 1280x1024, I'm getting (according to the mode line that
xvidtune shows) an interlaced display, which doesn't seem
to be as crisp as I get at other resolutions (which are all
-hsync -vsync, except for 1600x1280 which is +hsync +vsync).
The monitor rates are:
HorizSync 30-110
VertRefresh 50-160
The monitor is a MAG DJ920 (although the Monitor Identifier
is "MAG37206"). The video card S3 ViRGE/GX2 4MB. The mode
lines for 1280x1024 are:
> # -- 1280x1024 --
> # 1280x1024 @ 61 Hz, 64.2 kHz hsync
> Modeline "1280x1024" 110 1280 1328 1512 1712

I'm not sure why the Interlace line is being selected. To the
extent that I understand this (not much), the monitor should
be able to handle 1280x1024 @ 100Hz, 107.16kHz hsync. Is the
video card the limit?
2) I'm still getting a 1600x1200 virtual screen size, so I wind up
having to pan the screen. Is this derived from the fact that
there are 1600x1200 screen sizes in XF86Config? or elsewhere?
Or is this a property of the window manager (Enlightenment) or
GNOME?
