Subject: default screen for x configuration?

I just installed RH6.1, and for the first time in my
life it came up with a usable XF86Config right out of
the box. However, when I run startx, I seem to be
getting a 1600x1200 screen. I'm impressed, but my
eyes aren't up to the challenge. I'd like to be
running something more like 1280x1024. So, my question:
how can I set a default screen resolution?

I imagine this can be done with some option to startx,
which can preferably be stuck in a .xinitrc file.

Of course, I could just delete all references to 1600x1200
in XF86Config, but I like the idea of being able to use
CTL-ALT-+ to show off the higher resolution.
