Okay I finally fixed it.  Guess what it was...

/etc/hosts on zeppelin had the wrong IP address.  It had the IP address that
the machine had when it was on the LAN at work.  Now that the machine is
here, it has a new IP... and so as a WINS server it was goofed up.

I fixed that... all is well now.

It's always the simple things!
