rpm -e gnome

there's a whole slew of other gnome-* rpms that get installed, too.
On a friend's computer, I just sat there doing 'rpm -e gnome-blah' on
each one (some will go away, others won't saying "will break
dependency"), but eventually you weed your way down through the
dependencies and get them all removed.

As others have mentioned, XFree86 is the X server.  KDE and Gnome are
different environments that run on top of X.

/proc is cool :)
